Why do we dance with joy for nine nights? Well,
it is the nine days when we are suppose to thank the
female principle of nature and the goddesses connected
to them. The nine nights are dedicated to the three
main goddesses - Parvati, Lakshmi and Sarasvati. Naratri
is now becoming more of a commercial thing and less
attention is given to the spiritual aspect of the festival.
It is important to know what each day is celebrated
for and the importance of the rituals that should be

Sharad - The season marking the end of monsoon
and the beginning of winter.
Poonam - Full moon day.
On this day, when the moon is at its brightest in the
year, Lord Swaminarayan regularly played Raas (traditional
folk dance) with other Satsangi's. The kirtan 'Juo Juo
Sahelio Aaj Rasio Raas Rame…' depicts one such
amazing occasion in Panchala, when Bhagwan Swaminarayan
assumed multiple forms and played raas with all the
Satsangi's under the light of the moon. |

- Laxmi Pujan - 01/11/2005 |

Many
people know what Diwali is but living busy lives people
forget this joyous time and don’t conduct many
of the important rituals or take part in the festival
celebrations as traditionally done. We forget that Diwali
is not just a one-day celebration; it lasts for five
days and should be full of joy and festivity. During
Christmas people decorate their house, put up the Christmas
tree, have family meals together and give each other
gifts. They create an atmosphere which makes them feel
joyful. Diwali should be the same, even if we don’t
live in Indian we should continue our cultural no mater
where we are. Over the five days of Diwali your house
should feel different, it should feel like Diwali for
five days and not just the one. Homes should be decorated,
kids should be doing rangoli patterns outside the house,
sweets should be distributed to everyone, fireworks
should be displayed, divas should be lit, all disputes
should be settled, gifts should be given. Make this
Diwali full of joy. Read on to find out how each day
is celebrated.
